چکیده

Large-scale parallel finite-difference method (FDM) simulations of seismic wave propagation have been conducted using the Earth Simulator in order to clarify the complex seismic wavefield resulting from heterogeneities in structures and the source rupture process during the Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) earthquake (Mj 7.2; Mw 6.9) in 1995. High-resolution simulation using 240 nodes (1920 processing elements) of the Earth Simulator for seismic waves from the Kobe earthquake provided a very good reproduction of strong ground motions and a narrow zone of larger intensity (damage belt) appearing in the Awaji Island and KobeHanshin region. Thus, the current simulation model is considered to be suitable for application in predicting strong ground motions for possible future earthquakes, such as the occurrence of a large earthquake in Tokyo. The Tokyo metropolitan area is located over a tectonically complicated region, in which M7 inland earthquakes and M8 plate earthquakes have frequently occurred. However, no large earthquake has occurred for the past 80 years. Simulation results for a hypothetical earthquake in Tokyo indicate that most population centers would be affected by significant ground shaking of Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) intensity greater than 6 due to the strong amplification of ground motions in the thick sediments below Tokyo. Large earthquakes also produce strong shaking for relatively longer periods of approximately 6 to 8 s due to the resonance of seismic waves in the thick sedimentary basin. Such long-period ground motions would be most damaging to large-scale man-made structures, such as high-rise buildings, long bridges, and large oil reserve tanks, which were constructed in Tokyo after the 1923 Kanto earthquake.

Large-scale broadband simulation of strong ground motions from recent and historical damaging Earthquakes in Japan

A recent development of the Earth Simulator super parallel computer has made it possible to realized realistic 3-D simulations of high-frequency seismic wave propagations on a regional scale. Paralleling this development, the deployment of dense networks of strong ground motion instruments in Japan (K-NET and KiK-net) has now made it possible to directly visualize regional seismic wave propagat...

Parallel simulation of strong ground motions during recent and historical damaging earthquakes in Tokyo, Japan

The development of high-performance computing facilities such as the Earth Simulator supercomputer and the deployment of dense networks of strong ground motion instruments in Japan (K-NET and KiK-net) have made it possible to directly visualize regional seismic wave propagation during large earthquakes. Our group has developed an efficient parallel finite difference method (FDM) code for modeli...

Numerical Simulation of Seismic Wave Propagation and Strong Motions in 3D Heterogeneous Structure

Introduction The heterogeneities in the crust and upper mantle structure as well as the complex source rupture process have an important influence on regional seismic wavefield, particularly for high-frequency waves. Moreover small-scale heterogeneities such as for the sedimentary basin introduce significant amplification of ground motion, which lead to long ground shaking over several minutes ...

Chapter 21 PARALLEL EARTHQUAKE SIMULATIONS ON LARGE - SCALE MULTICORE SUPERCOMPUTERS

Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural hazards on our planet Earth. Hugh earthquakes striking offshore may cause devastating tsunamis, as evidenced by the 11 March 2011 Japan (moment magnitude Mw 9.0) and the 26 December 2004 Sumatra (Mw 9.1) earthquakes. Earthquake prediction (in terms of the precise time, place, and magnitude of a coming earthquake) is arguably unfeasible in the ...

A Strong Ground Motion Catalogue of Selected Records for Shallow Crustal, Near Field Earthquakes in Iran

Understanding strong ground motions in the near-fault areas is important for seismic risk assessment in densely populated areas. In the past, lack of information on strong ground motion for large and moderate earthquakes led to the use of mainly far field large and moderate earthquake records in equations for calculation of the strong ground motion parameters. In this article, we collected and ...
